Measurement of flow is an important aspect in the field of hydraulic engineering, both in case of open channel as well as pipe or conduits. In case of pipe conduits various flow meters are used for flow estimation; out of which venturimeter and orifice meter are most commonly used and conventional means. Pipes or conduit carrying sediment laden flow or slurry-water mixture is very common in most of the industries,sewage carrying system etc. Suitability of flow meters i.e. venturimeter and flow meter need to be analyzed for sediment laden flow. Due to the presence of slurry or sediments,coefficient of discharge of flow meter will vary.
In the present paper, various works that have been carried out till now in the analysis of characteristics of venturimeter and orifice meter with sediment laden flow are described.

The sudden drop of river bed level is known as Free over fall and acts as a control section. Thus it can be used for the estimation of discharge flowing through the river/stream/open channels. The depth of flow just at the free over fall is known as Brink depth or End depth, by measuring which the discharge can be estimated by correlating it with the critical depth of flow. In fact the discharge can easily be estimated if the critical depth of flow is known and there is a correlation between the brink depth and the critical depth of flow. In the present paper the works carried out in this field have been studied till date. It is also mentioned what work can be carried out in future by studying and analyzing the past work.Keywords

Accurate flow measurement is very important for proper and equitable distribution of water among water users. Due to increasing utilization and the value of water, measuring techniques become more important and necessary information concerning the volume of available water is very useful in planning for its future use and distribution for hydraulic engineers. There are several types of flow measurement devices currently in surface flow among the major types of measurement devices used in surface water are: weirs, flumes, current meters, turbine meters, ultrasonic meters, pitot tubes etc. The most common water measurement devices are sharp crested weirs and Parshall flumes. This paper describes about the flow characteristics for Parshall Flume.Keywords
